Sunsets on Empire, Raingods With Zippos, Fellini Days and Field of Crows are now available in the Fish Shop!
I left “Magic” in the studio just after midnight, his task to burn me off a copy of the story so far to take home to review.I was fragged and had to catch the plane back on Friday which meant a 7.30 am leave for Poznan as I’d elected to work another late session in the studio rather than move to the airport the night before the flight.
I think I surprised the breakfast room staff as it was the first time they’d met the creature of the night from room 202.First stop the studio and pick up “Magic” and the DVD copy then off into the recent dawn ,Aki at the wheel of the Flintstones Clown carrier, to bob, weave and wobble down the road towards Poznan. … Continue Reading
Bad sleep, sore back in my tight single bed and my head full of the documentary last night. Finished after midnight, couldn’t concenrate anymore after hours editing the Radio 3 interview which has wiped out all comers including the one we wanted to open the movie with. It’s a brilliant conversation with Piotr K that covers all the bases including the Sopot “to camera” one that was the previous main tread. Now we have to refine it and cut it into “user friendly” chunks and work out how to place them.It means rewriting the start but the substance is far more weighty and the filming more “sophisticated”. … Continue Reading
Groundpole day! Went to bed after midnight returning from the studio to the hotel as the snow fell silently in the streets.Up at 11 to get to studio for midday, the streets returned to wet, dirty grey, the pristine white blanket pulled away in the night.
I’d been looking forward to a walk in a winter wonderland, instead it was a falling drizzle, muddy paths and broken paving stones.
Smuggled a ham roll and a bottle of water in my pockets and stood outside the rolled down studio door waiting on “Magic”, the engineer to arrive .He was at the hotel waiting on me getting up.Breakdown in communications last night through bad wine and worse translation.Major rethink on the start of the movie and afternoon stripping an interview to bare essentials, composing a soundcheck, chasing mp3’s and tracking down filler footage to cover wavering shots and missing footage from Warsaw. … Continue Reading
Video editing suite in Zielona Gora! Currently rendering footage.Feel like I have been rendered myself.Hanging about in a studio again and trying deperately not to smoke in that Pavlovian dog manner when I get trapped in small rooms with engineers and flickering screens.Footage looking reat but a hell of a lot of work to do this week.
Stunning version of “Lucky” intercut with reactions to watching the derby game on a pc. Very funny! Will definitely have to put a PG warning on this as the language is pretty bad! :-)Fine version of “Sugar Mice” from Piekary gig and wonderful back stage footage of Foss playing classical piano on an upright edited with autograph sessions. … Continue Reading
Decided to shut me down this weekend and try and chill a bit. My friend Phil got out of hospital sooner than expected and is now resting at home, he seems to be ok but can’t drive for a month.Bad week to be heading back to Poland for more editing tomorrow as I would have preferred to be around here. Shower finally fixed so no more water torture and studio alarms serviced.ADT charged me over 150 notes for 1.2 hours work!! Complaint going in! Told 110 for first 30 mins and 39 or so after for every half hour after that! Might retrain as an alarm engineer if the guy was actually paid that rate! The price of Fear!Chris Kimsey delivered mixes of “Exit Wound” and “Rookie”, sounding fabulous and very different. … Continue Reading
Different vibe after Monday’s journey through the asteroid belt! On Tuesday music became secondary to domestic demands although I’d hoped to listen to at least one or two live shows during the course of the day.The hours were to be herded in other directions.
The “Fellini” hard drive left for London by carrier on the wings of a prayer and Chris K phoned to say he was starting the “Crows” remix that afternoon. The Putney cell is now operational! :-)Signed a bunch of “Scripts” and “13th Star” vinyl albums that are steadily moving out through the mail order and are surprising Elspeth and I with their rise in popularity since the beginning of the year. … Continue Reading
Freaky creaky rollercoaster of a weekend so far!Mark Wilkinson left on Friday with Rob Ayling, my distributor and project manager but not until after crossing with Chris Kimsey at the Tyneside.Imperial guard reunion.
Chris is up here to begin forwarding the “Fellini Days” and “Field of Crows” remixes which exist on old and dusty hard drives that are held in metal trays with handles that lock into a unit that feeds into the old Mac I have from days gone by.It’s called a Glyph system and I bought it at the close of the last century. It’s ancient tech, clunky, slow and feeds into the Mac using a scuzzy drive!I’d held onto the Glyph rack only because I had old drives and this was the first time it had been wheeled out since 2004 when we’d recorded the “Crows” tour on the road. … Continue Reading
Felt like going over the top of a trench under fire this morning since the klaxon alarm went off on the i phone! The news broke that David Darling, a friend of years gone by and excellent photographer who shot the “Internal Exile” cover portrait and the “Bro 52” single sleeve and who was a mentor to and great friend of Tara, being one of the first to recognise her talent and shooting her first modeling sessions, sadly died this morning after a long battle against cancer. My daughter is understandably very upset.Ironically Chris Kimsey and I had been listening to “Brother 52” over too much honey vodka in the wee small hours and I related the story behind it mentioning David in the passing. … Continue Reading
The competition winners were pulled yesterday and the “Electric Man” premier tickets were won by “Itsliz” who has still to get in touch! The invitations to the studio were won by Dave Barras, the director of “Electric Man” who’s already coming to the evening’s performance! Quite Fellini considering! 🙂 Accordingly there will be another draw made tonight!
Another “Fellini” moment yesterday when I was in the Grassmarket in Edinburgh in search of leads for the studio at the music store and was meeting Tara’s mother for a coffee. While waiting on her arrival I entered a convenience store and the owner said something about a “movie”. I thought he was referring to “Electric Man” which had featured the Grassmarket and I’d bought cigars from that store during the shoot. I nodded and smiled and exited to find cars queued up the street and police halting the traffic. It turned out that there was a full film crew shooting up the road, a far bigger budget than our humble project;extras milling around with polystyrene cups of steaming coffee at the makeshift catering tables as lights were hoisted, reflector boards and black out frames were erected and camera lenses changed as new set ups moved into place.
I was informed by on set paramedics that they were filming Irvine Welsh’s “Filth” with James Mc Evoy in the leading role. I had a nose about while I was waiting and noticed a middle aged looking guy with hat and trench coat, looking very much like an extra (it turned out he was). I wasn’t quite sure whether my recognition systems were working correctly and walked up to him with “are you who I think you are?” traversed around a questioning smile. “Yeah, know you too ” came back just as Tamara walked up and greeted me and the figure moved off before I had a chance to say anything else. It was Mr Welsh himself looking very different from the last time I’d seen him at Easter Road. We’d both middle aged and he looked far less the angry, edgy, wired figure I remembered from the “Trainspotting” premier after show party. And I was probably more bearded, bulkier, more gray and etched than he remembered me!
I knew he wasn’t a fan as a couple of press comments he’d made about me weren’t exactly complimentary and I knew he detested “Marillion”.
I’d lost touch with his writing quite a few books back having got tired of the formula.”Filth” is allegedly the follow up to “Trainspotting”, which I thought was a brilliant movie. I hope it’s better than “Acid House” that relied on shock rather than a story line to make an impression in my opinion.Interesting to see how it comes out and great to see movie cameras in the capital.
Back to the studio with speaker cable and after a few stressful moments as missing elements were traced and added the sounds filled the control room for the first time for too long a while.
A local sound engineer, Liam Morrison is helping me out with the techy stuff and gradually the live shows are being downloaded onto the system for future listening. It’s going to be a trial and judging from the first listens there’s going to be quite a few disappointments which have already resulted in a reevaluation of the project as regards finished product.
The Polish multi tracks had already thrown up problems with only 2 out of a possible 5 usable for technical reasons. The Manchester “Band on the Wall” sessions also threw up issues and nowhere near represented the performance.I am left with a limited number of multi track recordings and now rely on a sequence of stereo desk recordings to bolster the release.
I have decided that an elaborate box set is no longer in the mix and will be aiming for a multi cd composition taken from an array of sources packaged together with 2 mixed DVD’s, again from various sources at a reduced and more reasonable price to reflect the material.
I have taken what has been said on the Forum on The Company web site into consideration and appreciate current economics together with the desire for every fan to own recordings from the last tour.
I am now looking at a possible 4 cd “best of” from across the tour together with 2 DVD’s, again from various sources, as the primary box set, hopefully bringing this in at around
Missing baggage arrived at 8pm from Edinburgh. Not opened it yet, that disappointment can wait until tomorrow:-0 Great to put on clean underwear, socks and trousers this morning with a fresh clean shirt.Heaven! 🙂
Over 2 weeks waiting on a Pro Tools/mac cable so no listening session tomorrow and maybe not until next week.Jeezo! it’s not a NASA component!
Nero 11 burner arrived so another element in place for sorting out the Fishheads project and beyond.meeting with the AVP guys about the filming on March 10 and 11.Great ideas and this could be something quite special. It’s been difficult having to keep numbers down on the “audience” and disappointing some people as it’s going to be pretty crowded in the studio as it is. … Continue Reading
